Storage Sense in Windows 10
What has been added to Storage Sense recently?
Beginning with Windows 10, Storage Sense has improved your storage.
We’re continually improving with each release.
We’re introducing a new capability and tweaking Storage Sense’s behavior in the upcoming Windows 10 feature update (build 17720 and later).
Before we begin, it’s critical to understand that we designed Storage Sense to act as a quiet helper, doing tasks on your behalf without the need for configuration.
Occasionally, we’ll request your permission before making changes to your storage.
Storage Sense believes in being upfront about how it optimizes your storage for you.
The following material is provided for reference purposes only.
On-Demand Files and Storage
Sense Storage Sense now can automatically clear up disc space by restricting access to older, unneeded, locally accessible OneDrive files to the cloud.
Your files will remain secure in OneDrive and shown on your device as placeholders.
This is referred to as “dehydration.”
Your files that are only accessible online will remain viewable on your device.
When connected to the internet, you may utilize online-only files like you would any other file.
Storage Sense must be enabled in Storage Settings.
By tapping the toggle button, you may enable Storage Sense.
When your device runs out of free space, all files that have not been accessed in the past 30 days will be considered for deletion.
Storage Sense will dehydrate files only when sufficient space is freed up for Windows to operate normally.
This is so that we can retain as many of your files accessible locally as possible.
Self-activate in the Event of Low Storage
Storage Sense can now detect when your device runs short on storage space and automatically switches on.
Once engaged, Storage Sense will run intelligently whenever your device’s storage space becomes low and automatically delete temporary data that your device and apps no longer need.
Manual Clean up
If you want to launch a clean-up operation manually, you may click on the “Free up space now” option (seen in the red box below) on the Storage page under Settings.
You are forcing a storage clean-up manually.
Storage Sense will search your device for safe-to-clean files and estimate the amount of space that can be saved.
No files are gone until you click the “Remove Files” button.
Deprecation of Disk Cleanup
Although Disk Cleanup is being phased out, we keep it around for compatibility reasons.
There is no need to be concerned since Storage Sense’s capabilities exceed the old Disk Cleanup!
